Naturopathic Medicine

Symptoms of disease are seen as warning signs of improper functioning of the body.

Naturopathic doctors look at the symptoms, nutrient deficiencies, functional imbalances and unfavorable lifestyle habits to better understand the true underlying conditions causing the disease. Naturopathic assessment, diagnosis and treatment of each individual patient are accomplished by integrating modern and traditional care which includes clinical and laboratory diagnostic techniques. In addition to diet and lifestyle changes, natural therapies including botanical medicine, hydrotherapy, homeopathy, and traditional Chinese medicine/acupuncture, may also be used during treatments.

Naturopathic medicine is evidence-based, informed by clinical experience, research and the individual patient’s unique health situation.

Guiding Principles

  • 1 First do no harm
  • 2 Healing power of nature
  • 3 Identify and treat the cause
  • 4 Treat the whole person
  • 5 Doctor as teacher

In Canada, a naturopathic doctor must complete a 4-year accredited degree (the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine is a post graduate program), pass standardized North American Board Exams (NPLEX) and provincial board exams. In Ontario, another course/exam is required in order to prescribe certain substances.
